Nick Olsen Art

Nick Olsen is a Brisbane based painter who is interested in the built environment and how our living spaces reflect our cultural sensibilities through different times in our history. He uses a focus on light, tone and colour to elicit an emotional response and a sense of “place” in his work.

Beach Shacks

When I think about holidays I often remember childhood trips to various laidback beachside towns . To paint these gorgeous environments is to relive the sensations I felt as a kid. Sand and fibro, faded but intense colour, salty beach bush smells. I love the simple pleasures of the beach shack.

Caravans

To me caravans represent a sense of freedom. Helping to connect us with good memories of holidays and beautiful parts of the country. With their individuality and sculptural forms, they are great to paint and I love bending my brush around the curved edges of a sun bleached caravan.

Street Scapes

Streetscapes have become one a central part of my practice in recent times. I have always been fascinated with architecture and I the way the built environment can represent moments in time. Over the years buildings develop layers of meaning which to me can display an authentic Australian character. I particularly enjoy painting the Australian light that forms patterns and shapes across our buildings.

Landscapes

Landscape painting is popular genre that many people think of when discussing Australian art. We are blessed with an amazing array of landscape types which I think reflects the diversity of Australian culture. For me painting landscape is a discovery of colour, the brights are sun washed and intense and the darks are sharp and deep with a lot of variation in tone.
